Carbondale is a city located in Osage County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,478.
Founded in 1872. The community is served by Santa Fe Trail school district USD 434. which also serves Scranton, Kansas and Overbrook, Kansas. The Carbondale attendance center houses grades K-8 and in 2003-2004 served 384 students.
Carbondale was home to Jarrah Myers Notre Dame all-american softball player and member of the 2001 USA team.
From 1906 to 1908 the Daughters of the American Revolution of Kansas placed sixty-six markers along the path of the Santa Fe Trail as it ran through Kansas. Number seventeen is located in Carbondale.
The Carbondale City Library is located inside the City building in Carbondale, Kansas. The library opened in 1971 and is a member of the Northeast Kansas Library System, NEKLS. The library has a wide selection of children's and adult books. They have a great collection of large print books. The library also boasts a selection of audio books on tape and compact disc. The library has patron computers with a wide variety of programs and free use of the internet. The library also has a Friends of the Library organization which meets monthly.
Carbondale is located at 38°49'6" North, 95°41'30" West (38.818411, -95.691533). It is the first city south of Topeka, Kansas on U.S. Highway 75. It is on the northern edge of the Flint Hills of Kansas.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 km2 (0.8 mi2). 1.9 km2 (0.7 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 5.19% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,478 people, 581 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density is 781.7/km2 (2,020.0/mi2). There are 617 housing units at an average density of 326.3/km2 (843.3/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 96.75% White, 0.27% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. 3.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 581 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.16.
In the city the population is spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,550, and the median income for a family is $39,226. Males have a median income of $29,226 versus $21,300 for females.
